MEDIA KOLFAT Guide

How to find duplicate photos without deleting the wrong files

Duplicate cleanup can save space, but it is also one of the easiest ways to delete the wrong photo. The safest approach is to separate detection from deletion.

1. Filenames are weak evidence

Files named IMG_0001.JPG can come from completely different cameras or years. Names alone do not prove that files are identical.

2. Hashes identify identical bytes

A cryptographic hash such as SHA-256 can group files that contain exactly the same bytes. That is much stronger evidence for exact duplicates than filename or size alone.

3. Similar is not the same as identical

An edited photo, resized copy, rotated export, or recompressed image may look nearly the same while being a different file. Treat visual similarity as a separate problem.

4. Keep one trusted copy before cleanup

Before deleting duplicates, identify which location you trust as the organized library and keep a backup. Do not remove every copy from multiple drives at once.

5. Review groups, not isolated files

A duplicate tool should make it clear which files belong to the same group and where each copy is stored. Review paths and dates before making a decision.

6. Prefer reversible cleanup

Moving confirmed duplicates to a dedicated review location is safer than immediate permanent deletion. You can reclaim space after the review period.
