MEDIA KOLFAT Guide

Organize photos from phones, USB drives and external storage

Media usually arrives in waves: a phone upgrade, a copied DCIM folder, a USB stick from a family member, or an old external disk. The goal is to consolidate without losing provenance or creating more duplicates.

1. Copy each source into a staging area

If possible, keep each device or drive source separate at first. This makes it easier to trace a problem back to the original location.

2. Do not rename everything immediately

Original names and folder paths can provide useful context during troubleshooting. Organize by metadata and destination structure before deciding whether filenames need changing.

3. Expect duplicates

The same phone library may have been copied to several disks over the years. Duplicate detection should be part of the consolidation plan, not an afterthought.

4. Watch for missing metadata

Screenshots, downloaded images, edited exports, and messaging-app media may not contain reliable camera dates. Keep these exceptions visible for review.

5. Use one clear destination

A single organized destination makes future backups and browsing easier. Date-based folders are a practical default because they remain readable outside any specific application.

6. Verify, then archive old sources

After checking the organized result and your backup, you can decide whether old source folders should remain as archives or be cleaned up.
